Italian bass Andrea Mastroni began his musical education as a clarinettist before moving to vocal studies where he trained with Lella Cuberli, Rita Antoniazzi and Fernando Cordeiro Opa and graduated from the Istituto Claudio Monteverdi in Cremona. His awards include the Mario Basiola prize (2005), the Giuseppe Di Stefano prize (Trapani) for his portrayal of Sparafucile Rigoletto, the Bibiena (Mantua) prize (2007) and the XXXVII Prize Franco Abbiati for his performance in Perocco’s Aquagranda at Teatro La Fenice, dedicated to the tragic Venitian floods of 1966.
In concert he has performed Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Mussorgsky’s Songs and Dances of Death with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Johannespassion by Bach at the Ravenna Festival and at the MITO SettembreMusica (Milan and Turin), Shostakovich’s King Lear with Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto, Mozart’s Requiem in Padua with I Solisti Veneti, at the Festival Anima Mundi in Pisa with Christopher Hogwood, and with Opéra de Rouen Normandie, and has performed in recital at the Festival international d'art lyrique d'Aix-en-Provence. He has also sung Oedipus Rex with Santa Cecilia and with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kirill Petrenko. Recent operatic highlights have included Agrippina at the Bayerische Staatsoper and Royal Opera House Covent Garden, L'incoronazione di Poppea at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Rocco in Fidelio at the Ópera de Oviedo and Rodelinda at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and Opéra de Lille conducted by Emmanuelle Haïm.
An established recording artist, Andrea’s discography includes Gounod Roméo et Juliette with Fabio Luisi and Orchestra del Teatro Carlo Felice (Decca), Semiramide with Antonino Fogliani and Virtuosi Brunensis (Naxos), Lamento;songs for voice and piano by Henri Duparc with Mattia Ometti (Brilliant Classics), I Vespri siciliani (C Major) and Marchetti: Romeo e Giulietta (Dynamic), Serse by Handel for Deutsche Grammophon with Il Pomo d’Oro. Andrea has recently recorded and released a disc of Handel arias for bass with the Accademia dell’Annunciata. In 2020, Andrea featured on the Erato release of Handel’s Agrippina with conductor Maxim Emelyanychev and Il Pomo d’Oro.
Mastroni recently performed his much-anticipated debut at the Wiener Staatsoper in the Morris’s production of the Monteverdi’s Orfeo. He will be returning to Vienna later this season to perform Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria and Wurm in Luisa Miller. Additional season highlights include a return to the Deutsche Staatsoper in Don Carlos as the Grande Inquisitore, followed by Gremin in Eugene Onegin, at the Liceu, and Aci, Galatea e Polifemo with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin at the Boulez Hall in Berlin, as well as a European tour of Tolomeo with Il Pomo d’Oro.
