Clelia Cafiero is an Italian conductor and pianist.
For the 2021/2022 season she was appointed Assistant Conductor at the  Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice.
Recently she has performed with great success Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde in France, New Year’s concerts in Lisbon with Gulbenkian and Asmik Grigorian, at the 19th Witold Lutosławski Festival and Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival in Warsaw. She also was associate conductor with Lawrence Foster for the recording of a disc for the San Francisco Recording with whom she signs her first discographic production as conductor for 2024. For the 2022/2023 season, she will conduct some opera productions in France and in Canada, and some symphonic concerts in Romania, Poland, France and Italy. In 2024, she will be also music director at Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte (Montepulciano) – building on the rich heritage of composer Hans Werner Henze who started the Italian summer school and music festival for young singers, actors, musicians, conductors and composers.
From 2019 to 2021, she was Associate Conductor at the Opéra de Marseille, discovered by Lawrence Foster. She then left her position as orchestra pianist and vocal coach at the Teatro Alla Scala di Milano, where she was since 2013/2014.
Previously, she was engaged as guest conductor by the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra in Prague and chamber orchestra Cameristi della Scala. In parallel, she was assistant conductor of Antonio Pappano at the Royal Opera House for the production of Puccini's Manon Lescaut. The Gulbenkian Orchestra has also seen her conduct of Puccini's Madama Butterfly recorded by Pentatone Records alongside Lawrence Foster in 2019.
After winning the "Assami, women in music for life" prize, her career as a pianist has led her to perform in the world's greatest halls, including Royal Albert Hall in London, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Philharmonie de Paris, Carnegie Hall in New York, Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid, LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura, as well as tours in Japan, China and Canada.
She studied at the conservatories of Naples and Milan, at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and was invited to attend masterclasses in conducting by Maestri Daniele Gatti and Riccardo Muti. She also obtained a master's degree in philosophy at the University of Naples Federico II with the highest grade.
