Couplets de folies (arr. for flute and lute: Lucie Horsch)

Early music, new music – contrary to appearances, there are more similarities than differences between the two. Composers were opposing tradition and searching for an innovative language in the 17th and the 20th century alike. The basis for the Baroque stile moderno (as used in the title of Castello’s sonata) was the so-called accompanied monody, played on instruments of the performers’ choice (Castello: con diversi instrumenti). Here, these will be the flute and the lute – a duo which, although unusual, remains compliant with the spirit of the era. In Syrinx, Debussy referenced Greek music, as the Baroque era would do earlier. Is the Finnish composer Wennäkoski going to reference it as well, and if so, how? Due to its register and vitality, the flute has been treated in a manner similar to the human voice, hence the transcriptions of Dowland's and Caccini’s love songs in the programme. The bass part of continuo may be performed on the lute, assuming a form as varied as rich is the range of experiences offered by Couperin’s illustrative book, Marais’ variations-based folia and Philidor’s polyphonic sonata.
