Quartet of Mournful Song - NOSPR
Quartet of Mournful Song
Two great artists, both part of the Polish school of composition, passionately crafted chamber music. Górecki, less frequently, with his works being awaited for years – just like the String Quartet No. 3, which was meant to be ready in the mid-1990s but was ultimately revealed to us in 2005. A quatrain by Vladimir Mayakovsky concluding with the words "Gdy umierają ludzie - śpiewają pieśni" became the motto of the composition, directing attention towards ultimate matters. After the premiere of the piece, Bohdan Pociej in "Tygodnik Powszechny" called it the "Quartet of Mournful Songs."
Less voluminous but equally emotionally saturated is Krzysztof Penderecki's String Quartet No. 3 from 2008. In "Kartki z nienapisanego dziennika" the composer recalls his childhood and youth, creating a captivating, multi-threaded story, nostalgic and serving as a sonic self-reflection on the origin and essence of his musical language.
