Music, as a journey of the imagination, allows us to transcend our limitations by creating our own inner world. Grażyna Bacewicz’s Overture, written during the Nazi occupation of Warsaw, dazzles with its energy and pulsating rhythms. A symphony is a special kind of musical journey, resembling, according to Milan Kundera, ‘a voyage leading from one thing to another, farther and farther away through the infinitude of the exterior world’. The Symphony No. 8 (‘The Journey’) by the Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara, is a musical journey through the twentieth century and at the same time an autobiographical work. Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 (‘From the New World’), meanwhile, documents the Czech composer’s sense of awe at American culture, nature and burgeoning cities.
