NOSPR Chamber ensembles / NOSPR horn ensemble
It all started with the buffalo horn, which had served hunters as a signalling instrument for hundreds of years. It was only in the 18th century that a brass valveless natural horn, soon to be adopted by most European orchestras, was constructed. Its evolution was a long one. From horns of different sizes and keys, through instruments fitted with crooks and sliding crooks, to the ‘real’ French horns with valve-activated tubing. The horn became a part of the classic wind quintet, and its dense sound and wide technical possibilities have encouraged multiple players to establish horn-only chamber ensembles. The concert with NOSPR musicians will include, apart from arrangements, pieces by the Dutch composer Jan Koetsier, famous for his fondness for wind ensembles, and by Nicholas Perrini, the legendary horn player of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.
