There is no such certainty where the name ‘bassoon’ come from. It is argued that it derives from the Anglo-Norman language, later from a word ‘fagot’ borrowed by the French, which means a bundle of sticks – due to the similarity of the instrument to thong tied fasces, a symbol of clerical power in ancient Rome. Others claim that it derives from the Italian word ‘faggio’, meaning beech – to describe the wood from which the old bassoons were built. There is even a legend about the canon from Ferrara, who was looking for material for an instrument for so long singing to the Lord’s glory with his dark and deep voice, until eventually he was content with beech wood. It has passed more than four hundred years since the invention was created. Finally, there is an opportunity to fully appreciate the timbre possibilities of the contemporary bassoon: solo and in various ensembles.
