Georges Bizet
Suite from the opera Carmen (arr. for wind quintet: David Walter)
The wind quintet in its present form was born in the second decade of the 19th century – out of Anton Reicha’s 24 pieces for flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn and bassoon. The essence of such an ensemble is not a homogeneity of sound. Quite the contrary, its greatest strengths are the differences in timbre and the sound-producing technique. The above are all the more prominent if there is another instrument joining the quintet, for example the harp, highlighting the musical contrast between the East and the West in Chou Wen-Chung’s Suite. There will be more contrasts too: from the elegant simplicity in J.Ch. Bach’s piece, through Beethoven’s mimetic experiments, to Bizet’s Iberian fascinations.
